The latest wave of antisemitism has caused perplexity worldwide. As a starting point, Shulamit Volkov looked at the parallel waves of anti-Semitism after the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973. In doing so, she also addressed her well-known thesis of anti-Semitism as a ‘cultural code’, which she had already established for her research in the German Empire. In this way, similarities as well as different developments between older and current anti-Israeli attacks will be analysed.
In addition, the question of the extent to which criticism of Israel can be categorised as anti-Semitism and how it can be explained today, especially in relation to the scientific-political debate on the definition of anti-Semitism, will be addressed. Finally, the growing number of direct verbal and physical attacks on Jews - especially Jewish children - within the anti-Israeli atmosphere in German society today will be discussed. By bringing all these elements together, an attempt can be made to place current events in the right historical context and to shed light on them.
