Die Monographie von Pavel Baloun hat bereits große Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Die Menschenrechtshistorikerin Celia Donert betont in ihrer unkritisch positiven Rezension des Buches den Einfluss von Balouns Forschung auf die Revision der liberalen Demokratie als Urheber systematischer Diskriminierung. Die Roma-Aktivistin und Forscherin Renata Berkyová weist trotz einer insgesamt positiven Bewertung jedoch darauf hin, dass der Autor Archivquellen „dominanter Institutionen“ den Aussagen von Roma vorzieht, was seine ansonsten innovative Historisierung problematisch macht. Meiner Meinung nach fügt sich das Buch organisch in ein kürzlich wachsendes Werkwerk ein, das eine globale Geschichte von Landstreichern als Versuch darstellt, Rassisierung mit Kriminalisierung auf verschiedenen Ebenen der Sicherheitspolitik zu verbinden, um „modernen Bevölkerungen den Kolonialstatus zu verleihen“.
